Key Stage Tests are often known as SATs and are held in the final year of primary school - in year 6 when children are 10-11 years old.
 

  • Phonics Tests are now held at the end of Year 1 or Year 2 for those who did not attain the required level.
     
  • Key Stage 1  - Reception to Year 2. Key Stage SATs tests used to be held at the end of Year 2, but have now been scrapped.
     
  • Key Stage 2 - Year 3 to Year 6. Formal tests are held at the end of Year 6 in English and Maths. Science is not formally tested.
     
  • Key Stage 3 - Year 7 to 9. Formal tests were scrapped.
     
  • Key Stage 4 - Year 10 to 11 (GCSE).

Prior to SATs tests many children elect to take 11+ tests in those regions where grammar schools are options.
